We heard about an interesting story from Skip Prichard in one of his Leadership Lessons posts about Market Basket.

Most business schools today teach that the fiduciary responsibility of directors is to look after the interests of shareholders. As a company board is to be a steward of the corporation, shareholders could include customers, employees, shareholders, and others. Do you believe that an enterprise’s duties extend beyond shareholders to the broader community?

Patrice Lassere from Board Whisperer® has these comments to make:

A wonderful story. I found it fantastic that a whole community is prepared to stand for what they believe is right. And not just in words but action. Really got out of their comfort zone. It is a superb demonstration of how business has changed (for the better) in the past few years.
Why would the same principle that gave such good results in a business environment not be applicable to a country?
